Canal 13 is a privately owned Chilean free-to-air television channel. It began broadcasting on August 21, 1959 on frequency 2 in Santiago, in a transmission led by a group of engineers from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Later the frequency changed to channel 13, which gave rise to its current denomination. In its beginnings, one of its most important milestones and that gave the real kick-start of this new medium, was the transmission of the World Football Championship in 1962, held in Chile. Since then, Canal 13 and its areas of operations have increased over the years. Since 1995 it has had a second subscription signal, called 13C (formerly Señal 3), with cultural programming.
