Rai 3 is the third television channel of Rai. The channel is of a generalist type and offers programming based on journalistic and cultural analysis, as well as large spaces dedicated to local self-government. Born thanks to the RAI reform of 1975, after over a year of experimentation, Rai 3 began its regular broadcasts at 18:30 on 15 December 1979, half an hour before the debut of TG3 and the opening broadcast was presented by the young Fabiana Udenio. At the beginning, the service reached all regional capitals and 45% of the Italian population. The programming was between five and six hours a day, mostly dedicated to programs by the Department of Education (now Rai Cultura).
